A gold chain is often the first piece of 22ct gold someone buys for themselves, and the one they wear most. It might be a fine chain for a new pendant, a heavier link for a son's 21st, or a new chain to replace a much-loved old one.

What to look for

The 916 stamp

Look for 916 on the clasp or on a small tag near it. That marks the chain as 22ct, or 91.6% pure gold. All our gold pieces carry a purity stamp, and our post on what 22ct means explains the other numbers you might see.

Patterns

Every pattern looks and wears a little differently:

  • Curb: flat, interlocking links that lie smoothly. A popular choice for men and for heavier chains.
  • Rope: twisted links that catch the light from every angle.
  • Box and fine link chains: neat and simple, good for carrying a pendant.
  • Beaded and fancy chains: gold beads or decorative sections, which look good worn on their own.

Our post on minimalist 22ct chains has more ideas for simple everyday styles.

Choosing length and gauge

Length

The easiest way to choose is to measure a chain you already like wearing, clasp to clasp. Shorter lengths sit around the base of the neck and suit open collars. Longer lengths fall onto the chest and give a pendant room to hang. Men often prefer a little more length. If you are buying a gift, borrow a chain the person already wears and measure it.

Gauge

Gauge is the thickness of the links. A fine chain looks delicate and suits a small pendant. A thicker gauge looks bolder and is a good choice for every day or for carrying a larger pendant. Heavier and more detailed chains cost more, and we'll show you options to suit your budget side by side.

Wearing and caring for your chain

At 91.6% gold, 22ct is rich and pure, so treat it kindly and your chain will look good for years.

  • Take your chain off to swim, play sport and sleep.
  • Put on perfume and lotion first, then your chain.
  • Store chains separately, laid flat or hung, so they don't knot.
  • If a clasp ever feels loose, bring it in. Repairs are available in store, and we'll tell you what's possible.

Our 22ct care guide covers cleaning and travel.

Buying a chain on a trip home

Many people from Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada pick up a chain while they are home.

  1. Measure the length you want before you fly, and note whether it is for a pendant.
  2. Call or email ahead on +679 806 4660 or info@shreejifiji.com if you want a particular pattern or length.
  3. Bring the pendant if the chain is for one, so you can see them together.

Visitors on a non-Fiji passport may be able to claim VAT back on a chain kept unworn until they fly out; our Tourist VAT Refund Scheme guide explains who is eligible.

At the counter

Bring the length you want, and the pendant too if the chain is for one, so we can check the bail fits and the gauge is strong enough to carry it. We'll lay a few patterns out side by side so you can see how each one sits.

FAQ

Good to know

What length of gold chain should I buy?

Measure a chain you already like wearing, end to end, and use that as your guide. Shorter chains sit at the base of the neck; longer ones fall to the chest and suit pendants.

Can I wear a 22ct gold chain every day?

Yes, many people do. A slightly thicker chain is a good choice for daily wear, and it's worth taking it off for swimming, sport and sleep.

Do you sell pendants to go with your chains?

Yes. We carry initial, designer and religious pendants that pair with our chains. Call and ask if you are after a particular design.

Purity stamps

Read the stamp

Every gold and silver piece we sell is stamped with its purity: a small number pressed into the metal. Look for it on the clasp, inside a ring or on the back of a pendant.
