When a family starts planning a wedding, the bridal set is often one of the first things they talk about, and one of the last things they settle on. It has to suit the bride, the outfits, the budget and, quite often, the opinions of several generations.
What a bridal set usually includes
In many Fiji Indian families, a bride's wedding gold is built around a necklace set, often with matching earrings, worn together with her mangalsutra and bangles. Gold has long been given to a bride to wear and to keep as her own. Which pieces are given, and by whom, differs from family to family, so start with what your family expects. Our Fiji Indian wedding jewellery guide goes through the main pieces.
What to look for
The 916 stamp
A 22ct set should be stamped 916 (91.6% pure gold), usually on the clasp or the back of the necklace. Every gold piece at Shreeji Jewellers carries a purity stamp. Read our guide to buying 22ct jewellery for more on what to check.
Style
- Traditional: fuller necklaces with detailed gold work, and sometimes coloured stones. These suit the main ceremony.
- Modern or lighter: slimmer, more open designs that are easier to wear again at other functions.
- Short or long: a choker or close-fitting necklace sits high on the neck; a longer one falls onto the chest. Some brides wear one of each.
Think about the neckline of the wedding outfit. A high neckline suits a long necklace that falls below it, or a short choker sitting above it. An open or deep neckline suits a choker or a set that sits close to the neck.
Statement or lighter
A fuller set makes a statement at the main ceremony. A lighter set is comfortable through a long day and easy to wear again. Many families balance one statement set with lighter pieces for the other functions. Heavier and more detailed sets cost more, and we'll show you options to suit your budget.
Planning around the wedding
- Choose early. Give yourselves time to look, go home, talk it over and come back.
- Bring the outfit, or a photo of it. It is much easier to match colour and neckline with it in front of you.
- Bring the bride. A set looks different when it is worn than when it is lying in a tray. Try it with her hair as she plans to wear it on the day.
- Choose the earrings with the necklace. Make sure she is comfortable wearing the earrings for several hours. Our gold earrings page has more on this.
Wearing and caring for a bridal set
22ct gold is rich and pure, so treat the set kindly and it will be worn for years to come.
- Put the set on after hair, make-up and perfume are done.
- Take it off before bed and lay it flat in its box.
- Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after each wear, and store each piece separately.

Coming home for the wedding
If you live in Australia, New Zealand, the USA or Canada and the wedding is in Fiji, our wedding jewellery timeline helps you plan.
- Call or email before you fly on +679 806 4660 or info@shreejifiji.com with the style you have in mind and your wedding date.
- Visit early in your trip, not the day before the wedding.
- Bring the outfits, or photos of them, so we can help you match colour and neckline.
At the counter
Bring the bride, the outfit or a photo of it, and anyone whose opinion counts. Tell us which functions the set is for and whether it needs to sit with a particular mangalsutra or bangles. Our bridal jewellery page shows how the pieces go together.
FAQ
Good to know
What is included in a bridal necklace set?
Most sets pair a necklace with matching earrings. What else comes with a set varies by design, so call and ask about a particular piece.
How early should we choose the bridal set?
As early as you can. Choosing a few weeks or months ahead gives the family time to compare designs and match the set to the outfits. If you are flying in, call or email before you travel.
Can the bride wear her 22ct set again after the wedding?
Yes. Many brides wear their set at later weddings, pujas and Diwali. Store it in its box between wears and keep it away from perfume and hairspray.
